Was beginning to get a bit too comfortable in Bristol; the office/pub/North Street routine has just about run its course. I am bit worried about finding a job out there but there are a few english-language offices and call-centres to fall back on, and there is always Irish pub barwork. Besides there are worse things than having time on your hands in Berlin. But before the Bristol era is over there are two potentially great gigs; Joe Lally plays the Croft (Feb 9th) and Trans Am rock the Cooler (March 1st). Hopefully this old town will go out with a proverbial bang rather than a whimper.

I am the Master

<img style="FLOAT: left; Sure i still find myself imitating the Randall walk, or maybe even Olav's immortal rendition of 'Beserker,' but Mallrats always felt a slightly more honest film to me in that it was more open about its presentation of Smith's eighties teen movie brand of romance. I think i have grown out of Kevin Smith. On the evidence of his latest outing Kevin Smith has not grown out of Kevin Smith though.

Clerks 2 is shamelessly nostalgic and reverent toward its predecessor, from the opening credits first reading 'Clerks' before the belated addition of '2' to the final shot's homage to the first film's milk lady. This for me is why it fails as a sequel, above any qualms about the whether or not the original 'needed' one or whether the motivation was purely economic. Most sequels aren't needed, but at the very least they expand on the ideas, narrative or aesthetics of their forebears Clerks 2 fails because it doesn't change the way you think about the first one, a sequel should throw some sort of new light on its predecessor. Smith is too reverent of his first film to challenge it in any way, its as though he wanted to make a sequel without risking any damage to his museum peice calling card. On a story level Smith steers clear of any real reference to the events of ten years prior and no explanation is given as to what happened to the film's two female leads. This kind of narrative amnesia jars with the fact that Randall seems to have a clear recollection of that one fateful day a decade ago though, (perhaps he watched Clerks in preparation for his appearance or at least has been using the internet machine at Mooby's to post on the View Askew boards) going as far as to quote Dante's catch phrase from the movie 'I'm not even supposed to be here today!' If this is Smith's attempt at capitalising on the irony of revisiting his earliest work its a missed opportunity. Which is perhaps the best way of looking at Clerks 2, not only is it a sequel that shouldn't exist its also one that doesn't work as a sequel.

Its no Wrath of Khan thats for sure. There is no character development to speak of, Dante's character arc is the same as the first movie, Randall is revealed as... Dante's best friend! Jay and Silent Bob get little to do, Jay even does the same comedy dance routine twice. And the female characters are so underwritten as seem more like props than dramatic participants in events. Becky merely acts as foil to Randall's bad mouthing, whilst Dante's fiance is so one dimensionally vapid that its no surprise the only actress willing to play her was Smith's own wife.

For me Smith hasn't so much raped the memory of the first film but stroked it in a detached, yet admiring way. A new kind of bad sequel perhaps? One that tries only to remind the viewer of the original, rather than mimic it wholeheartedly?

The Multifaceted Weekend; or a Weekend of many parts, if you will.

It all began on a sunny friday evening and another trip to Cardiff, which seems to be a home from home at the moment. Chiefly responcible for creating this feeling of hospitality is the Cat's Penis himself Mr G. Postans. Taz and I were there to take a gig, the bill included four acts which turned out somewhat a mixed bag. Dirty Ray and Milkteeth (www.myspace.com/milkteeththeband) were enjoyable, the others not so. The Venue was kinda cool though, a cafe/bar type affair which pleased Taz by ticking all the coffee/chocolate/cake boxes and kept me happy with bottled Estrella Damm (reminding me how much I enjoyed Barcelona was a Proustian bonus). The place was called A Shot in the Dark, handily next to a Whetherspoon's from which the more awake clientelle had smuggled cheaper booze. Next day Taz and I did the usual round of Cardiff based shopping, despite my howls of derision Taz bought a cheap copy of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs album (not the new one as taz said; "that would be rubbish") to sit next to her Seconds album. She has since confessed that she has learnt from her mistake.
Yesterday was St George's Day. For some this means nothing. For others (Mail Readers) this was an excuse to bitch about 'modern Britain' in not even barely concealed racist terms, and says things like 'the Welsh get St David's Day!' as though this was justification enough to shoe-horn another bank holiday in to a month that would simply split at the seams and let puddle water in if it were actually a shoe but isnt. For some of the regulars at the Steam it was simply an excused to get fat on beef and cheese and drunk on Old Peculier and British sparkling white, whilst singing the first lines of various patriotic anthems over the top of the rest of the song in a loud and obnoxious manner. It was fun listening to a Wurzel's live album though. Might have to Amazon that one innit.

There is no round-the-corner anymore...

If only Phil had been less interested in the cup of tea he bought from the museum machine he might have created a more fitting document of a gig that will remain in stark clarity against all those half remembered ones, and not just because it was in a museum (and so lacking a bar) but because it was so good. Even with Mr Mackaye suffering rather severe stomach upset/food poisoning from a moka java hemp bar they played for over an hour, in a smallish room lined with C19th portraiture and glass cabinets with model galleons and the jaws of large fish. The set featured a surprizing number of new tracks (at least 4) in which the Evens seem to have amped up the explicitness of their politics, lyrically speaking or course. The penultimate track was directly addressed to Dubya himself and dedicated to all those who will be left to sort his mess out after the current administration is gone. The sound was crisp and just the right side of a little quiet, the between track banter ranged from surreal to polemic with startling deftness. Despite his green countenance Ian was on form. Phil decided Amy Farina has the skiniest arms of any drummer on the planet.

The Evens: Live At Swansea Museum

Wales's oldest you know. Definitely better than the Tortoise/Ex Fishtank anyway. In other news I bought a 1976 Can album called Flow Motion for a fiver from Fopp. Sadly its reggae. After one particulary raucus practice session in John's Warhammer-strewn bedroom Tom turned off his amp and back to his to his assembled colleagues and pronounced, perfectly serious "Hey, what about.... POWERSWITCH!". Needless to say young Owen was laughed out of the room, but oh how it could have all been so different. With a name like that our boys would surely not have been able to resist the temptation offered by thrash metal and we would all be drinking snakebite at the Queens Tap and wearing Pantera t-shirts.

The band we now all know as The Sugary Bombs were actually called Look to the Detail (or Look to Detail depending on your source) for a while. Whilst this no longer sounded like an Iron Hearse side project it does sound very self consciously indie/art rock. It wasn't until Ben Owen came along with his fancy book learnin and saved us from more terrible names that Sotb found theirs. Ben now claims not to remember the source of his inspiration but my research shows that D.H. Lawrence coined a term very much like it in his seminal essay entitled "Surgery for the Novel--Or a Bomb?", placing the term somewhere within that whole 1920s/30s-Futurist-Vorticist-Modernist milieu.

Surgery have their own Pete Best. The only man with anything like a legitimate claim to being the fourth Bomber is Ben New. At one point Newwy was being considered as a possible candidate for the still unfilled position of second/rhythm guitarist, and even sat in on a few practice sessions I believe. Newwy has not been afriad to cash in on his negligable association with the band as well, once willingly recieving the attentions/services of a young lady who had mistaken him for "the drummer from Surgery or the Bomb" much to the chagrin of John who at the time had gotten himself confused for Tristan in the eyes of Debbie. Sadly this story does not end with an amusing instance of Tristan masquerading as Newwy.

After their early dalliance with metal and before their serious art-rock credentials were solidified Surgery had a brief flirtation with prog, even going as far as moving an ancient and extremely heavy organ into the Bell-Pit, resulting in visible strainage of thin 1970s floor boards. I believe Danny attempted some sort of ill advised attempt to muscle into the band via loud exclamations of "I can play the piano! I learnt at school!". Rest assured Newwy's fourth member credentials were not seriously challenged by this young upstart.

Karate Is Dead!

Last couple of days I've been percy chilling with this album, partially due to not having enough money to do anything else and partially due to something Jof said. I was going to write something about how I had misjudged 'pockets' and maybe Jof was right to castigate Newwy and I for lambasting the direction Farina and co. had taken over the last couple of albums. So there I was looking for an appropriate jpeg to accompany this post, and I find this; www.geofffarina.com
The thing that bothers me most is that 'pockets' doesn't feel like a last album, at least not in the satisfying way that Fugazi's 'The Argument' does (I'm working on the assumption that it will be despite the lack of an official announcement regarding Dischord's finest). 'pockets' seems to be Karate beginning to hit their stride again rather than a farewell type affair, with 'pockets' they seem to have nailed the slow stuff in a way that songs like 'south' on the previous album failed to do whilst adding spark to the jazzy upbeat numbers that were the highpoints of 'Some Boots'. Its a shame about Geoff's ears but I'd be happy with a studio-based Karate album as a send off. You know for the fans. Like Newwy and me.

Sotbjof In New Blog Shocker!

www.onionsandthousands.blogspot.com
Hilarity and mirth to be found in spades at Jof's new blog. They were meant to acompany the 'weekend from heaven' entry from a while back. Phone cameras can do wonderful things. I especially like the bottom one that looks like the monolith from 2001 has landed in Roald Dahl Place. Its actually an huge obelisk that is covered by solid streams of water cascading down the sides. Think maybe the monolith would be more useful than a fountain for the Welsh though, bring their primitive society up to speed. Originator of the Queanie Leg, Pioneer of bum-shaving, tanin-addiction and fashions including; the paper/plastic plate chest combo of '99 and the alopecia chique of '97. It's man's best friend and credit card companies natural enemy; Phil Maull. This photo says it all really, but thats not going to stop me! Phil spawned from the primordial soupy sludge that is Rodbourne, which of course makes him a Rodule if ever there was one. His attempts to scrabble up from his lowly beginnings and incinuate himself into Oldtown society in the early to mid nineties were embarassing for all observers, his mullet and ski jacket setting him apart immediately as the hick from down Kings Hill that he really was. Phil soon left the noble borough in shame to find a more fitting home amongst the scum of Swansea where his Ready Steady Cook-borne culinary skills and 1980s bachelor pad home decor caused him to be worshipped like a god by the surrounding peasantry. Now from atop his Uplands-situated castle in the sky Phil surveys his kingdom and lowly minions, filled with self satisfaction but dogged by the feeling that "perhaps, oh god no, I've lost my Episode One Chancellor Valorum!"

Revenge Of The Sith Review Coming Soon! Whilst some critics took exception to the unreconstructed and juvenile homophobia implied by their name, Fudge Monkey won audience hearts with crowd pleasers such as 'We Don't Care' (sample lyric; "We don't care, we don't care, we don't care about YOU!") and their unquestionable joie de vivre. With The Ape replaced with a gazelle type creature straight out of greek mythology and Fat Doug consigned to the annals of Swindon's murky history Surgery was born. Tommy Longhead (aka the Chimpadore), John (star of the small screen) Bell and Jofanon (you wont see me in a pair of speedos) Middleton played their first (now infamous) show at New College Battle of the Bands 2000. With this baptism of fire behind them Surgery went from strength to strength penning memorable early material now sadly missing from their live set, much of which can be found (or not) on bootleg copies of the legendary Danny Sessions, now somewhat of a Holy Grail for bombites like myself. Academic entanglements soon slowed this early progress, geography coming between the members like an argument over a tatooed girlfriend. The Surgery story does not end there however, as the Bomb were soon to return stronger than ever with a slew of gigs at their spiritual home The Vic (www.thevicswindon.co.uk) before moving on to campuses across the country in support of bands like jovial pop rockers Optimist Club (www.optimistclub.co.uk) and club dates with mysterioso funksters Twinkie (www.twinkos.org.uk). Critics raved (www.oppositiont.co.uk/36002.html?*session*id*key*=*session*id*val* ) and audiences fell in love all over again. Flushed with success the Bomb have now undertaken what will surely be the highlight of their so far short career in show biz; a date in support of their future selves and undisputed heroes Bilge Pump (www.gringorecords.com) at Camden Barfly. On a Saturday. This coming October. The Bomb will not only surely conquer Camden and the capital but the world.

Weekend from Heaven Part 2

Friday 9:30ish as things wound down at the food fest we headed for the nearest and least pretentious pub, The Packet as it turns out, accompanied by John the cheesefarmer/mongerer and his girlfriend. John gave us a lift home and offered a lift back in the morning, meaning we could use the return the portion of our tickets the next day.
Friday10;00ish return journey spent playing 'guess what's making that disconcerting rattling noise' in John's battered Renault estate.
Saturday 10;00am up just in time to purchase a Guardian and drink half a cup of coffee before returning to the (t)rusty Renault, now acting as a combination sauna/greenhouse for the crawl down Mumbles Road. This summer really is too hot for me. its not natural to wake up sweating unless you are Anakin in episode 2 and worried about your mother. it is certainly not as much fun to recreate this scene in real life as say, pretending you are Luke on Hoth when stumbling up a snow drift, or feigning force powers via a small hand gesture when approaching automatic doors.
Saturday 11:30am After visiting the craft fair at Cardiff Bay at which Taz bought some nice earrings we wandered into town hungry for a slipper (essentially pizza dough bread sliced open filled with cheese ham etc then reheated) from Cafe Minuet in Castle Arcade. I really like this little place, its a shame they charge £1.20 for the privilige of sitting at a table though. We just get take out. After eating outside the castle we visit Spillers, TRU, The Entertainer, Habitat before succombing to the heat and beating a retreat to Cafe Europa. Taz bought a large but reasonably priced vanilla icecream milkshake which I was glad of despite claiming not to want any initially.
Saturday 4;00 two hours spent in my (current) favourite place in the world doing one of my favourite things. Chapter Arts Centre, doing the quick crossword (slowly) with an Erdinger. We ate a fusion chicken stir fry/curry before walikng back to the station.
Sunday 1;30 watched the end of a boring Grand Prix before heading along the coastal path to Langland for a very refreshing swim and sunbathe, back home for possibly the best roast I have ever cooked despite it being Quorn burger-based. I have pioneered a new gravy formular: 1tbs tesco veggie grave granules and one tbs Bisto for beef granules with a dash or two onf red wine allowing it to reduce on the hob a little rather than adding more granules until it gets thick, as was my old tendency.
All in all a relaxing and enjoyably middle aged weekend I think you'll agree.

Weekend from Heaven?

Friday 2:00pm- Taz got really angry with being stuck in Swampea after a hard day at Concord Discounts complete with new manager who thinks that the staff should have Concorde themed uniforms. Someone ought to tell her where she can stick the missing 'e'.
Friday 3:ish Taz shepherded me onto a train to Bristol against my wishes. somewhere around Neath I managed to convince her that Cardiff was a better bet due to the fact we lacked sufficient funds for accomodation.
Friday 4:00pmAfter debarking (to coin an annoyingly satisfying Americanism-a bit like a Rodeo Melt really) we decided to walk to Cardiff Bay to see what the fuss was all about. Bute Street was a bit scary Complete with store-front drunks and teenage mothers. Wasn't until later we noticed the more sanitary route along LLoyd George Avenue. My impeccable sense of direction can't be right everytime after all.
Friday 4:30pmIt was worth it when we got there since the Cardiff International Food Festival was in full swing complete with a Stuttgart tent selling HofBrau for only £2 a bottle. Our old housemate, John Savage Ontswedder (lush name and he looks like a young Elvis) was also there peddling his family's cheese. Teifi cheese. its good. I'd put a link here but I don't have one to hand.
Friday 5:30pm after setling for organic veggie burgers (Taz went for curried chickpea topped with mint yoghurt which beat my black-and blackened-bean though i did keep the sweet chilli dream alive. I think i've had this condiment with every meal this week. Except my virtuoso aubergine toad in the hole. more about this later.) we walked around the entertainment/reastaurant area making the obigatory stop at Coffee Mania for Taz. I was surprized at how civilised the whole place was to be honest. I wasn't however tempted to patronize any of the expensive Bars especially not the Brains owned Salt.
Friday 7;00 ish repaired the Roald Dahl Plas just in time to catch the soul band drafted in to entertain the foodies strike up with some Otis Redding/James Brown etc. One amusingly stocky man's dancing was particularly entertaining. His objective seemed to be to get as low to the ground as possible whilst still standing upright. Only at one point did this not look really odd- dury the twist. almost as entertaining as the time Phil and I saw a man who not only looked and dressed exactly like Calrton from Fresh Prince But danced like him too! And in the dingy surroundings of Swansea's Long defunct indie club The Zone nee 21st Cenury Rocket. Lush.

Feral Hymns Review

Love is Love was the best Lungfish album for a while so Hymns had to be good. The artwork is so cool that maybe i was headed for disappointment. Upon first listen the signs were good, but not great, and after a fair few listens (not as many as i would have liked due to a wonderful but unexpected weekend spent at Cardiff International Food Festival and Chapter Arts Centre) I'm fairly confident that this album lacks both the catchiness of Love Is Love and the scope of earlier stuff like Rainbows from Atoms. I like it alot though because even a lacklustre Lungfish kicks more ass than an on-form Les Savy Fav for instance. I'd take any job right now (within reason I suppose- though professional baby killer might spice up my c.v. hmmm....). It seems even Greggs don't want me. I have also failed to get started with my dissertation (working title: Everything I Know I Learnt From Star Wars). A good omen today though; the uni library has just gotten in four copies of the trilogy on dvd. Perhaps inspiration is just around the corner. Had a good night last night, Taz and I constructed a kind of bbq without the bbq (salsa type saladd, potato salad, tomato and mozzarela salad, nice bread, lidl black forest ham, cypriot white wine) and scaled Mumbles head to eat atop the cliff and enjoy the view.
